Following a procedure similar to that described in Example 17(c), 760 mg of 1-{2-[4-(3-chlorophenyl)butyl]phenoxy}-3-dimethylamino-2-propanol [prepared as described in step (b) above] were converted to the hydrochloride by passing it through a column packed with CM Sephadex C-25 (H+ type), and recrystallizing it from ethyl acetate, to give 571 mg (yield 68%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 83°-85° C.
