10 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane were added to a solution of 1.13 g of 1-t-butoxycarbonyl-2-{2-[2-(4-phenylbutyl)phenoxy]ethyl}piperidine [prepared as described in step (b) above] in 10 ml of dioxane, and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was freed from the solvent by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was washed with hexane and dried in vacuo, to give 0.94 g (yield 97%) of the title compound as a colorless oil.
