Procedure

630 mg of (S)-1-t-butoxycarbonyl-2-{2-[2-(3-methoxymethoxyphenyl) ethyl]phenoxymethyl }pyrrolidine [prepared as described in step (a) above] were dissolved in 10 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane, whilst ice-cooling, and the solution was allowed to stand at room temperature for 3 hours. At the end of this time, the mixture was concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure, and the resulting oily residue was dissolved in a small amount of isopropyl alcohol; the solution was then allowed to stand, whilst ice-cooling. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration and dried in vacuo, to give 318 mg (yield 66%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 127°-129° C.
