2 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane were added to a solution of 0.99 g of 4-t-butoxycarbonyl-2-{2-[2-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]phenoxymethyl}morpholine [prepared as described in step (a) above] in 2 ml of dioxane, and the mixture was allowed to stand at room temperature for 16 hours, after which it was concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate, and the solution was allowed to stand at room temperature. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration and dried in vacuo, to give 0.42 g (yield 52%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 110°-112° C.
