Procedure

5 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane were added to a solution of 420 mg of (S)-4-t-butoxycarbonyl-2-{2-[2-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]phenoxymethyl}morpholine [prepared as described in step (a) above] in 5 ml of dioxane, and the resulting solution was allowed to stand at room temperature for 1 hour. At the end of this time, the solution was concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, the resulting oily residue was dissolved in 20 ml of ethyl acetate, and the resulting solution was allowed to stand at room temperature. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration and dried in vacuo, to give 279 mg (yield 78%) of the title compound as colorless needles, melting at 105°-106° C.
