Procedure

0.660 g of 2-(2-{2-[2-(2-methoxymethoxyphenyl)ethyl]phenoxy}ethyl)-1-methylpyrrolidine [prepared as described in step (a) above] was dissolved in 5 ml of dioxane, and 5 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane was added to the solution. The mixture was then allowed to stand at room temperature for 30 minutes, after which it was concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting colorless solid was dissolved in a small amount of a mixture of methylene chloride and methanol, and about 30 ml of ethyl acetate were added to the solution, which was then allowed to stand at room temperature. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration and dried in vacuo, to give 0.555 g (yield 86%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 168.5°-171° C.
