Procedure

0.520 g of (2R,4R)-4-hydroxy-2-(2-{2-[2-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]phenoxy}ethyl)-1-methylpyrrolidine [prepared as described in step (c) above] was dissolved in 5 ml of dioxane, and 1.1 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane was added to the solution, which was then concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting oil was dissolved in 2 ml of methylene chloride, and 40 ml of ethyl acetate were added to the solution, which was then allowed to stand at room temperature. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration and dried in vacuo, to give 0.420 g (yield 73%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 100°-102° C.
