Procedure
0.858 g of 1-t-butoxycarbonyl-3-{2-[2-(3-difluoromethoxyphenyl) ethyl]phenoxymethyl}piperidine [prepared as described in step (a) above] was dissolved in 8 ml of dioxane. 8 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane was then added to the solution, whilst ice-cooling, and the solution was allowed to stand at room temperature for 1 hour. At the end of this time, it was concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure, and the resulting oil was dissolved in 50 ml of ethyl acetate. The solution was allowed to stand at room temperature, and the crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration and dried in vacuo, to give 0.680 g (yield 92%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 153°-154° C.
