To a solution of the product of step (i) (1.1 g) in a mixture of methanol (500 ml) and tetrahydrofuran (100 ml) was added 30% palladium-on-charcoal catalyst (300 mg) and the mixture stirred in an atmosphere of hydrogen at ambient temperature and pressure until all the starting material had been consumed. After removal of the catalyst by filtration, the solvent was evaporated in vacuo to give 4-[4-(4-pyridyl)piperazin-2-one-1-yl]phenol as a colourless solid, essentially one spot by tlc, which was used without further purification or characterisation.
