A solution of 20% phosgene in toluene (10 ml, 19 mmol) was added to a solution of 1-(2,4-dimethoxybenzyl)benzo[f]quinoxaline-2,3(1H, 4H)-dione (950 mg; 2.6 mmol) in dry N,N-dimethylformamide (100 ml) with stirring at 0° C. The mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight, and evaporated to dryness. The residue was triturated with ice/water, filtered and dried in vacuo to give 900 mg (90%) of the title compound, m.p. 186° C. 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6): δ 3.80 (s, 3H), 3.82 (s, 3H), 5.65 (s, 2H), 6.45 (dd, 1H), 6.55 (d, 1H), 7.00 (d, 1H), 7.35 (m, 1H), 7.55 (m, 1H), 7.75 (m, 2H), 7.90 (m, 1H), 8.22 (d, 1H).
