Reaction Steps

1 eqv. of 1-benzyl-4-[3,3-bis(4-cyanophenyl)-2-propenyl]-1H-imidazole hydrochloride is dissolved in ethanol (40 ml) and a catalytic aamount of 10% Pd/C is added. The reaction mixture is stirred at 40° C. in a hydrogen atmosphere until the uptake of hydrogen ceases. The mixture is filtered and the filtrate is evaporated to dryness. The residue which is the product is purified by column chromatography methylene chloride-methanol (9:1) as eluent.
