Procedure

To a solution of INTERMEDIATE 8 (1.66 g, 3.3 mmol) in methanol (15 mL) and water (5 mL) was added lithium hydroxide (0.69 g, 16.5 mmol). After 5 hours at room temperature the methanol was removed and INTERMEDIATE 9 was precipitated from the aqueous solution by the addition of 2M hydrochloric acid.
