Procedure

After addition of 3-chloroperbenzoic acid (98.8 mg, 0.571 mmol) to a solution of 2-[1-[(4-chlorophenyl)sulfinyl]pentyl]-1,4-difluorobenzene (Isomer 2-B) (150 mg, 0.439 mmol) in methylene chloride (5 ml), the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. The reaction mixture was diluted with methylene chloride, washed successively with a 1N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, water and brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated. The residue thus obtained was purified by medium-pressure chromatography on a silica gel column (10% ethyl acetate-hexane), whereby the title compound (122 mg, 77%) was obtained as a colorless oil.
