To a solution of (Z)-methyl 3-(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-3-((2-ethoxy-2-oxoethyl)amino)acrylate (4.68 g, 15.1 mmol) in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (38 mL) was added (trimethylsilyl)isothiocyanate (12.9 mL, 90.8 mmol). The resulting solution was purged with nitrogen gas for 3 times, and the mixture was heated at 110° C. for 18 hours. The mixture was cooled down to room temperature and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure to give a red solid. This residue was suspended in a mixture of 3:1 heptane/EtOAc (200 mL), and it was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The solid was filtered, and triturated with CH2Cl2 (100 mL), concentrated under reduced pressure and dried under vacuum the title compound (4.42 g, 87%) as a pink solid. This material was used without further purification in the next step.
