To a solution of tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-ylmethanol (Combi-Blocks, 2.0 g, 17.2 mmol) in 10 mL of of CH2Cl2 and 10 mL of of pyridine was added p-toluenesulfonyl chloride (3.5 g, 18.1 mmol) in portions over 15 minutes. The mixture stirred at ambient temperature for 16 hours and was quenched with 10 mL of saturated, aqueous NaHCO3. The layers were separated and the aqueous layer was extracted with three 10 mL portions of CH2Cl2. The combined organic extracts were dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound. 1H NMR (300 MHz, dimethylsulfoxide-d6) δ ppm 1.05-1.25 (m, 2H), 1.40-1.53 (m, 2H), 1.73-1.94 (m, 1H), 2.43 (s, 3H), 3.14-3.28 (m, 2H), 3.71-3.84 (m, 2H), 3.88 (d, J=6.4 Hz, 2H), 7.48 (d, J=8.5 Hz, 2H), 7.79 (d, J=8.5 Hz, 2H); MS (DCI/NH3) m/z 288 (M+NH4)+.
