A mixture of 3-bromo-4-methoxybenzonitrile (Aldrich) (10.0 g, 47.2 mmol), PdCl2(dppf)-CH2Cl2 adduct (Aldrich) (1.00 g, 1.22 mmol) and triethylamine (12.5 mL, 89.7 mmol) in 100 mL of methanol in a high pressure vessel was heated to 100° C. at 60 psi of CO2 for 4 h. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and filtered. The mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound. 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) δ ppm 3.91 (s, 3H), 3.98 (s, 3H), 7.06 (d, J=8.5 Hz, 1H), 7.76 (dd, J=8.7, 2.3 Hz, 1H), 8.10 (d, J=2.1 Hz, 1H).
