To a solution of 1-benzyl-4-nitro-1H-indazole (350 mg, 1.38 mmol) in acetic acid (5 mL), in a reaction vial was added bromine (265 mg, 1.66 mmol). The reaction vial was sealed and heated to 80° C., with magnetic stirring, for 2 hours. The mixture was allowed to cool. Saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution was added (sufficient for the mixture to reach pH 8). The resulting solids were collected by filtration and washed with water. The material was dried under vacuum to give 1-benzyl-3-bromo-4-nitro-1H-indazole (455 mg).
