Raney Nickel (15 g) and NH4OH (20 mL) were added to a suspension of (R)-2-mercapto-5-methyl-6,7-dihydro-5H-cyclopenta[d]pyrimidin-4-ol (12 g, 65.8 mmol) in distilled water (100 mL). The mixture was refluxed for 3 hours and then filtered. The filtrate was concentrated to afford (R)-5-methyl-6,7-dihydro-5H-cyclopenta[d]pyrimidin-4-ol (9.89 g, 99%). MS (APCI+) [M+H]+ 151.
