To a solution of 6-chloro-3-iodo-1-(tetrahydro-pyran-2-yl)-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (25 g, 57 mmol) in 1,4-dioxane (200 mL) was added an aqueous sodium hyroxide solution (1M, 180 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 7 hours and then an aqueous HCl solution (1M, 200 mL) was carefully added. Water (140 mL) was added, and after 5 minutes of stirring the precipitate was filtered, washed with water, cyclohexane and then dried to afford the title compound as a yellow solid (17.1 g, 73%).
