Procedure

7-Hydroxy-6-nitro-1(2H)-phthalazinone (which may be prepared by the nitration of 7-hydroxy-1(2H)-phthalazinone) is dissolved in aqueous sodium hydroxide, reduced with hydrogen and 10% palladium on charcoal catalyst and the solution filtered and neutralised to give 6-amino-7-hydroxy-1(2H)-phthalazinone.
