Reaction Steps
30 g of (5-bromo-3-methylpentyl)-malonic acid diethyl ester were heated to the boil, while stirring, with 15 ml of 48% HBr and 15 ml of HBr/glacial acetic acid, whereby the low-boiling products were distilled off. After 7 hours the cooled reaction solution was distributed between benzene and water and the organic phase was evaporated with MgSO4 after drying and distilled off.
