A mixture of 1.63 of the product of Step B, 0.21 g of sodium bicarbonate, 0.66 g of potassium thioacetate, 10 ml of water and 5 ml of acetone was heated at 90° C for 21/2 hours and was then acidified with 1 ml of acetic acid. The mixture was vacuum filtered and the solid product was washed and chromatographed over silica gel. Elution with a 1-1 methylene chloride-ether mixture and then with a 5-1-4 acetone-water-ether mixture yielded 830 mg of 7-[2-(2-tritylamino-4-thiazolyl)-acetamido]-3-acetylthiomethyl-ceph-3-eme-4-carboxylic acid.
