Procedure
To a mixture cooled to 0° C. of 2.5 g of 95 (%) strength HNO3, a spatula-full of urea and 10 ml of water is added with stirring and ice-cooling, 1.0 g (0.004 mol) of carboxy-2-hydroxymethylmalonic acid. After 10 min 2.5 g of 94% strength H2SO4 are added dropwise with stirring and stirring is continued for another hour at 0° C. The organic layer is isolated and evaporated down. 2-carboxy-2-nitryloxymethylmalonic acid is obtained as the residue as a viscous oil which is purified column chromatographically.
