1 g (3.5 mmol) of methyl 2,2-bis(nitryloxymethyl)-3-nitryloxypropionate is heated with excess aqueous hydrazine hydrochloride solution for 5 hours on a water bath. The mixture is poured onto ice and slightly acidified with hydrochloric acid. After column chromatographic separation of the oil which is produced, 3-nitryloxy-2,2-bis(nitryloxymethyl)propionic acid hydrazide is obtained as a colourless oil. Yield: 63%.
