A solution of N-tert-butoxy-1-[4-(4-chlorobenzoyl)piperidine-1-sulfonyl]piperidine-2-(R)-carboxamide (100 mg, 0.22 mmol), [prepared as described in Step 1 above], in 1,2-dichloroethane (10 ml) was cooled to −30° C. and HCl gas was bubbled through it for 10 min. The reaction vessel was then sealed and stirred at RT. After 2 days, the reaction mixture was vented with nitrogen and then concentrated in vacuo. The residue was chromatographed (PTLC, SiO2, 10% methanol/methylene chloride) to give N-hydroxy-1-[4-(4-chlorobenzoyl)piperidine-1-sulfonyl]piperidine-2-(R)-carboxamide as a white solid (5 1%), mp 84.4-86.4° C.
