9,9-Dichloro-9-silafluorene (1.1 g, 8.5 mmol) was dissolved in 80 mL of THF. To this solution was slowly added lithium 4-(3′,5′-di-t-butylphenyl)-2-isopropylindene (3.0 g, 8.5 mmol) as a dry powder and the solution was stirred overnight. After this time, the solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was taken up in diethyl ether. The solution as filtered through frit to remove LiCl and the solvent was removed in vacuo and used as a crude product (3.9 g) for the next step.
