10 g (96.9 mmol)of 5-amino-l-pentanol was dissolved in 300 ml of toluene and refluxed together with 17.2 g (116 mmol) of phthalic anhydride at 120° C. for 24 hours. The solvent was distilled off in vacuo, and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent; chloroform) to give 16.6 g of 5-phthalimido-1-pentanol in a yield of 74%.
