In a manner similar to Example 2, 1.8 g (5 mmol) of ethyl 5-(1-benzylindol-3-yl)-2-ethyl-2,4-pentadienoic acid was hydrolyzed to give the corresponding acid, m.p. (ether): 169-170. NMR (CDCl3 /DMSO-d6) spectrum shows broad triplet and quartet at δ1.10 and δ2.47 respectively; the benzyl methylene signal appears at δ5.30 as a broad singlet.
