A mixture of 9.25 parts of 1-chloro-2-propanone, 48.6 parts of 1-(4-fluorophenylmethyl)-N-(4-piperidinyl)-1H-benzimidazol-2-amine dihydrobromide, 32 parts of sodium carbonate and 135 parts of N,N-dimethylformamide was stirred and heated overnight at 50° C. The reaction mixture was poured onto water and the product was extracted with 4-methyl-2-pentanone. The extract was dried, filtered and evaporated. The residue was crystallized from 4-methyl-2-pentanone, yielding 15 parts (39.5%) of 1-[4-[[1-[(4-fluorophenyl)methyl]-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl]amino]-1-piperidinyl]-2-propanone (intermediate 130).
