Procedure

To a solution of trans, trans-2,4-nonadien-1-ol (20 g) in chloroform (400 ml) was added manganese dioxide (125 g). The mixture was stirred for 11 hours at ambient temperature and then filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give an oily residue, which was subjected to a column chromatography on silica gel (developing solvent: chloroform). The eluate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give colorless oily trans, trans-2,4-nonadienal (9 g).
