Procedure
The product of Step A was added to a mixture of 10 ml of acetone and 3.5 ml of 2 N hydrochloric acid and the acetone was evaporated. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate and the ethyl acetate phase was triturated with ether. The mixture was vacuum filtered to obtain the syn isomer of 3-acetylthiomethyl-7-[2-(2-tritylamino-4-thiazolyl)-2-hydroxyimino-acetamido]-ceph-3-eme-4-carboxylic acid which was then stirred with 4 ml of aqueous formic acid (1 volume water--2 volumes of formic acid) at 45° C. for 10 minutes. The mixture was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure and the residue was triturated with 5 ml of water. The mixture was vacuum filtered and dried under reduced pressure to obtain 1 g of raw product which was dissolved in 20 ml of ethanol. The mixture was vacuum filtered to remove insolubles and the filtrate was evaporated to half its volume. 20 ml of ethanol were added thereto and the mixture was again evaporated to half its volume. The mixture was vacuum filtered and the product was washed with ethanol and with ether to obtain 0.5 g of purified syn isomer of 3-acetylthiomethyl-7-[2-(2-amino-4-thiazolyl)-2-hydroxyimino-acetamido]-ceph-3-eme-4-carboxylic acid.
