Dimethyl 4-pentyloxyphthalate (3.0 g, 10.7 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (20 ml), and a 1N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (25 ml) was added to this solution. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 6.5 hours. A 3N aqueous hydrochloric acid solution (20 ml) was added to this reaction mixture. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (40 ml×3), and washed with saturated brine (30 ml). The organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The drying agent was filtered off, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give a crude product of 4-pentyloxyphthalic acid. This crude product was not further purified, but used in the next reaction.
