A mixture containing 4,5-diamino-nicotinic acid ethyl ester (79; 1.81 g, 10 mmol), 2-trifluoromethylbenzaldehyde (1.9 g, 11 mmol), Na2S2O5 (9.5 g, 50 mmol) in 50 mL of DMF was stirred at 120° C. for 18 h. Upon cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was poured into 100 mL of cold water. The resulting solids were collected by filtration, washed with water, and dried to provide 2-(2-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-3H-imidazo[4,5-c]pyridine-7-carboxylic acid ethyl ester 80 (2.35 g, 70%)
