Trifluoroacetic acid (15 ml) was added to a solution of (R)-2-methoxymethoxymethyl-2-methyl-6-nitro-2,3-dihydroimidazo[2,1-b]oxazole prepared in Example 28 (3.1 g, 13 mmol) in methylene chloride (30 ml) followed by stirring at room temperature for 25 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. Methanol was added to the solution, and the resulting mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. To the residue, 2-propanol was added, and the precipitates were filtered off and washed with 2-propanol to afford (R)-2-hydroxymethyl-2-methyl-6-nitro-2,3-dihydroimidazo[2,1-b]oxazole (1.2 g, yield 46%) as a light yellow powder.
