Procedure
A stirred solution of 3-[4-chloro-2-(dibromomethyl)phenyl]-1,2,5-thiadiazole (0.452 g, 1.23 mmol) and potassium sulfate (0.334, 2.45 mmol) in concentrated H2SO4 (20.0 mL) was heated to 90° C. for 1.5 h. The solution was poured into ice water, basified with saturated aqueous sodium carbonate and extracted into EtOAc. The organic phase was dried (Na2SO4) and reduced in vacuo. 5-Chloro-2-(1,2,5-thiadiazol-3-yl)benzaldehyde was isolated as a solid. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz) δ 7.70 (s, 2H), 8.05 (s, 1H), 8.82 (s, 1H), 10.28 (s, 1H).
