Procedure

A solution of 8-carbamoyl-6-phenyl-3,4-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazine-2-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (8.0 g, Reference Example 3) in dichloromethane (300 mL) was treated with N-chlorosuccinimide (3.12 g). After stirring at room temperature for a further 16 hours the reaction mixture was washed four times with water (50 mL) and then once with brine (50 mL). The organic phase was then dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated. The residue was subjected to column chromatography on silica eluting with a mixture of ethyl acetate and pentane (3:7, v/v) to give the title compound (4.3 g) as a white solid, m.p. 183–185° C. 1H NMR [(CD3)2SO]: δ 7.52–7.40 (m, 5H), 7.30 (bs, 1H), 6.80 (bs, 1H), 4.81 (s, 2H), 3.82 (t, 2H), 3.66 (t, 2H), 1.43 (s, 9H).
