Procedure
To a solution of 2,4-dichloro-5-nitrobenzoic acid (8 g, 33.9 mmol) in toluene (200 ml) was added thionyl chloride (12.4 ml, 169 mmol) at room temperature. The mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 5 h. The solvent was removed and the residue was dissolved with tetrahydrofurane (60 ml). The mixture was added 40% methylamine (1.4 ml, 33.9 mmol) at 0° C. and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2.5 h. The volatile component was removed under reduced pressure, and the residue was extracted with ethyl acetate (100 ml). The organic layer was washed with water (100 ml), brine (100 ml), then dried (Na2SO4). After removal of solvent, the crude product was purified by flash column chromatography eluting with hexane/ethyl acetate (2:1/1:1/1:2) to afford 5.3 g (63%) of the title compound as pale yellow solids.
