Na2SO3 (10.42 g, 82.65 mmol) was suspended in 40 ml water and 20 ml ethanol. 2-Cyclopropyl-4,5-diiodo-1H-imidazole (3500 mg, 9.72 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred at reflux for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated to 20 ml and then filtered. The solid was dried for 5 hours at 50° C. under reduced pressure (<10 mbar) to get a light brown solid (1.50 g, 66%), MS: m/e=235.1 (M+H+).
