A mixture of [2-amino-5-[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,3-dioxolan-2-yl]phenyl](3-chlorophenyl)methanone (prepared as described in WO 98/49157) (0.088 mol) in methanol (300 ml) and THF (100 ml) was cooled on an ice bath. sodium tetrahydroborate (0.088 mol) was added portionwise. The mixture was stirred at a low temperature for 30 min, then hydrolized and extracted with DCM. The organic layer was separated, dried (MgSO4), filtered and the solvent was evaporated till dryness. The product was used without further purification, yielding 36.6 g (100%) of 2-amino-α-(3-chlorophenyl)-5-[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,3-dioxolan-2-yl]-benzenemethanol (intermediate 9).
