To a solution of 15.0 g of 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-thieno[3,2-b]azepine in 150 ml of dichloromethane cooled to 0° C. is added 27.2 ml of triethylamine. After stirring 5 minutes, a solution of 28.0 g of 2-chloro-4-nitrobenzoyl chloride in 140 ml of dichloromethane is added slowly. The solution is stirred at room temperature overnight, diluted with 450 ml of dichloromethane and the solution washed with 200 ml each of water, 2N citric acid, 1M sodium bicarbonate and brine. The organic layer is dried over Na2So4, filtered through a thin pad of hydrated magnesium silicate and the filtrate concentrated under vacuum. The residue is crystallized from ethyl acetate to give 24.3 g of off-white crystals, m.p. 131°-134° C.
