12 g of manganese dioxide are added to 2 g of 7-hydroxymethyl-2-phenylbenzo [b]furan (prepared according to Example 1 from EP 306 226) in 100 ml of methylene chloride and the mixture is heated under reflux for 1 hour. It is cooled end filtered with suction over a filtering auxiliary, and the filtrate is concentrated.
