Procedure

The parent quinoxalinedione (Example 33) was mixed with 50 mL trifluoroacetic acid and 1 mL fuming nitric acid at 0° C. and stirred for 3 h, then warmed to room temperature for 2 h. The solvent was evaporated, the residue taken up in acetone, and the solid collected by filtration. After washing with water and then tetrahydrofuran, the material was dried to give 1.3 g of the compound as the hydrochloride salt.
