To the product of step (a) in 30 ml of toluene was added 4 g manganese dioxide. The suspension was refluxed for 7 hours with mechanical stirring and with azeotropic removal of water. The mixture was filtered and the filter cake washed with ether. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo to yield 2.08 g of 2,4-dichloro-3-(3-ethoxy-2-methyl-4-methylsulfonylbenzoyl)pyridine as a brown semi-solid.
