A mixture of 2-n-butyl-1-(2-chlorophenyl)methyl-5-hydroxymethyl-1H-imidazole (1 g) was refluxed with thionyl chloride (20 mL) for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was evaporated in vacuo and the residue was triturated with diethyl ether to give 1.08 g of 2-n-butyl-1-(2-chlorophenyl)methyl-5-chloromethyl-1H-imidazole hydrochloride.
