Ethyl trifluoroacetate (0.29 g, 2.0 mmol) was placed in a round bottom flask, and dissolved in ether (12 mL). To the stirred solution was added sodium methoxide (25%) (0.84 g, 3.9 mmol), followed by 7,8-dichlorothiochroman-4-one from Step 2 (0.42 g, 1.8 mmol). The reaction was stirred at room temperature overnight (19.4 hours) and treated with 3N hydrochloric acid. The organic layer was collected, washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated in vacuo to give a brown oily solid which was used without purification in the next step.
