Procedure
A solution of 50 g (0.23 mol) of 4-[2-(3-cyanopropyl)phenyl]-2-butanone, 8 in 125 ml glacial acetic acid and 125 ml concentrated HCl was refluxed overnight. The solution was evaporated and the residue diluted with H2O. The precipitate was recrystallized from benzene-petroleum ether to give 42.5 g of the keto acid 9, mp 59°-61° C.
