Sodium (0.69 g) was dissolved in ethanol (45 ml) and 3-(5-tetrazolyl)thioxanthone-10,10-dioxide (4.68 g) was added. 3-Dimethylaminopropyl chloride hydrochloride (2.37 g) was added to the mixture, which was then stirred and boiled under reflux for 2.5 hours. On cooling some solid separated, which was filtered off and discarded. Overnight yellow crystals of 3-(2-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-5-tetrazolyl)thioxanthone-10,10-dioxide separated and were filtered off and recrystallised from ethanol, m.p. 141°-142° C.
