Procedure
59.0 mg rel-α-{6(R)-[7-amino-1(S)-ethoxycarbonylheptylamino]-5-oxo-3(R)-phenylperhydro-1,4-thiazepin-4-yl]acetic acid (prepared as described in Example 8) were dissolved in 1.0 ml of a 0.5N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was adjusted to a pH value of 4.5 by the addition of 1N aqueous hydrochloric acid and was then concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure to precipitate 45 mg of the title compound.
