Procedure
Heat 126 g of the aldehyde of Step C in a mixture of 1500 ml of glacial acetic acid and 1500 ml of 48% hydrogen bromide in an oil bath at 150° C. with mechanical stirring until no trace of nondemethylated product remains (4-5 days). Col the reaction mixture and pour into 7 liters of water. Separate the precipitate, wash well with water and dry in vacuo at 70° C. to constant weight. (Yield: 108.2 g).
