PROCEDURE

A mixture of 4.0 g (0.018 mol) 2-(iodomethyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene, 3.4 g (0.018 mol) 3-(1-hydroxyhexyl)phenol and 3.4 ml NaOH (5N) in 50 ml DMSO and 20 ml THF was stirred at room temperature for a period of 48 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. The concentrated reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted with ether. The ether extract was washed with water, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure. The residue was passed through a silica gel comumn using hexane/ethyl acetate (3:1) as eluent. Evaporation of eluent gave an oily product (1.3 g).
